Popular low-ceilinged basement leather/rubber gear-and-toy outlet which started in 1985 in the Schmilinskystrasse. Original MR CHAPS owners (and lovers) Horst Menzen and American-born Andrew Day both died in 1989, when Ingo Szogs took over, moving the shop twice, most recently in 2003, just a few doors away from the workshop that keeps the shelves and racks stocked with reliable leather wear (most of it Blue Angel-certified). Outsourced rubber and previously manhandled clothing are also in the mix, as is made-to-measure (plus repairs and alterations). Not to mention toys for every orifice. In 2023 Szogs handed the keys over to his friend Jean-Claude Borer while maintaining a shop presence.

Fabulous selection, great second-hand finds
For being a basement boutique, the store is actually pretty extensive, and has a solid selection of leather, rubber, and neoprene. I was happy to see such a big second-hand selection as well--as a student, I can't afford the new stuff. I found a pair of Levi's leather 501s for a fraction of what they would have cost new. They're in great condition--they could have been on the other side of the store, and I doubt anyone would have noticed. The owner is knowledgeable and incredibly friendly. Even gave me gummi-bears with my purchase.
