Impressive and visitable harbour redevelopment
Officially designated as HafenCity in 2008, this kilometer-long stretch of industiral harbour-side Hamburg boasts one of Europe's grandest urban reinventions, conceived in the 1990s and started in 2000, with completion not expected until 2020-30. The area is marked by beautiful 19th-century warehouses, now juxtaposed with modern developments including Hamburg's most hyped new structure, the Elbphilharmonie concert hall [see entry], due to open in 2017 (pushed way, way back from 2012). Comprised of ten planned neighbourhoods, HafenCity is home to offices, hotels, shops, residential areas, urban plazas and much new infrastructure, including the nearly finished Baakenhafen Bridge and U-Bahn stations. The visitor centre is located at Am Sandtorkai 30, open Tue to Sun 10am—6pm (until 8pm in summer), with guided free two-hour guided tours available.
