Literaturhaus Café
Since 1989, Germany's second Literaturhaus (started in 1985) has offered one of the city's more visually pleasing spaces in which to eat well-prepared European food, from breakfast coffee and bun (plus F Scott Fitzerald pancakes and dishes named after Twain and Hemingway) to salmon and gnocchi later in the day (most dishes under €20 as of 2023). An ornate high ceiling, chandeliers, large windows and grandness are not what you'd expect from a café linked to a serious institution attracting Nobel Prize winners, up-and-coming authors, artists and debating philosophers, but that's what you'll be bowled over by upon entering this 19th-century villa. A foil to the Lange Reihe for sure, and only a pleasant ten-minute Alster-view stroll away. The bookshop's stock of academic works is serious and impressive, and there's a quiet reading café (and bar) in addition to the afore-mentioned splendid Festsaal (festival room/salon). Closed Monday and Tuesday.
